The first part of the commercial shows the Logos when she uses examples of what animals do like us, It also has Ethos because she is making us believe what she affirmed, and I personally was persuade by her. Pathos is represented with the animals doing stuff like humans, like the cat playing chest or the dog helping the old lady. I think the idea and the purpose of the commercial are well explained, and I personally agree with her.
In the beginning she shows us examples of things that her animals have learned from being trained and things that they have learned on their own. This was the logos section of her commercial. And I agree with the posting above that it was also her ethos section and I also agree that I was convinced by her argument. The pathos section contained images of animals carrying out actions that seem human-like. I feel that she completely covered her topic and had a convincing argument with very valid points.
Lizzy, Although, I felt your video certainly displayed the ability of animals to learn and adapt I feel it's a stretch to compare them too closely to human learning. Most experts in the field of animal behavior believe that their learning is primarily associative or instinctive; some animals also display some cognitive learning abilities. Overall, I thought your video is good; however, it didn't persuade me in any way to change my views or emotions concerning animals. By the way, I have two dogs, two rabbits, and a bunch of fish. My two dogs are totally different - a beagle that seems to be driven by instinct and a Cavalier King Charles (foo foo dog)that seems very intelligent.
The first part of the commercial was ethos, actually showing that animals can perform intelligently. The second part of the video was the logos, showing statements about what animals have done and relating that to the question of whether or not animals are more intelligent than we think. The pathos was the third part of the video, which showed images of animals that evoked emotion and statements appealing to our own ideals and what our society believes as a whole.
I've personally seen examples of unusual animal intelligence myself, and although it is unexpected for animals to act in ways that humans do, the behaviour does seem to be primarily driven by instinct, though in my opinion cognitive thinking is inferior in many ways to instinct as far as intelligence is concerned. Just because an animal doesn't make attempts to learn about human culture or come up with similarly clever ways to get things they "want" does not necessarily make it inferior to us. An animal can have many needs and desires just like us, which may come into conflict with one another, so we shouldn't be so quick to conclude that they have vastly inferior intelligence compared to us. We aren't born knowing all we know, but rather are taught it by teachers. Were we were not taught these things by our parents and teachers as we grow up and had no official language or education, that would be a more accurate comparison of human and animal intelligence. The real difference between us is more accurately motivation and will.
Animal Intelligence is a great topic. The ethos is when she states she is with the SPCA and has been researching animals intelligence. The logos is that lives are saved because of the intelligence of animals. I found the pathos to be the funny pictures of animals doing human activities, like the dog reading with glasses, the cat playing chess, and the parrot brushing its beak.
I think the commercial was good. It shows what great things animals can do. There have been “miracles” where animals have saved families. It makes me think of animals like humans, there are smart ones and stupid ones. Animals are great at being trained to do things for people, just look at rescue dogs, guide dogs, bomb dogs, and drug dogs. After writing that sentence I though, where are the cats. This makes me think that dogs are an intelligent animal. When you look at society you don’t think of any other animals that serve and protect. Horses may assist police, but they are not sniffing out bombs or drugs.
The beginning Lizzy gives herself credibility (ethos) by saying she has been with the SPCA for so many years researching animals and their intelligence. The logos I felt was the pictures of the animals being able to do things we would not think of, like the cat playing chess, or the parrots with special skills. The pathos was at the end where lizzy used animoto to get across animals saving lives which hits on an emotional level with us. The video did a great job of fulfilling the ethos, pathos, logos. I felt that she did a great job of getting all 3 across. The only comment that I have is the videos I felt should have been cut a little better or tried to be made more cleanly without talking to the person holding the camera then it would have felt a lot more like a commercial.
